AWS is retiring the SysOps Administrator Associate certification and replacing it with a brand-new credential: the CloudOps Engineer Associate. This is not a simple rebrand — the underlying content is being updated to reflect how cloud operations work has evolved since the original SysOps exam was written.

The exam code is changing from SOA-C02 to SOA-C03. The core domains of the certification remain recognizable, but the new version aligns more closely with modern cloud operations practice: broader in scope, more detailed in its outline, and more representative of what operations engineers actually do day to day.

It remains an associate-level credential — positioned below the specialty and professional tiers in AWS's certification hierarchy, and still considerably more approachable than an exam like DevOps Engineer Professional.


Why AWS Made the Change

The "SysOps Administrator" title reflects an earlier era of infrastructure management. It doesn't capture what cloud operations professionals spend most of their time on today:

  • Orchestrating containers with ECS and EKS
  • Managing multi-account and multi-region architectures
  • Implementing infrastructure as code
  • Working with modern monitoring and automation tooling

The "CloudOps Engineer" title is a more accurate description of the role as it exists now. AWS frames the change as a response to the evolving nature of cloud operations and a broader shift in industry terminology — a description that lines up with how job postings and team structures have already moved.

Key insight: This is a content refresh disguised as a renaming. Anyone assuming the exam is "the same test, new label" will be caught off guard by the container and multi-account material now baked into the outline.

Who Should Take This Exam?

The official AWS exam guide describes the target candidate as someone with:

  • One year of AWS operations experience
  • One year in a related operations role
  • Familiarity with at least one scripting language
  • An understanding of networking concepts
  • Knowledge of monitoring and troubleshooting techniques

That bar is reasonable for an associate-level operations exam. Candidates without "cloud" in their current job title are not automatically disqualified — hands-on home labbing (standing up VPCs, deploying containerized workloads, configuring monitoring dashboards) builds the same practical familiarity the exam is testing for.

Exam tip: Scripting familiarity doesn't mean mastery of a specific language. The exam expects recognition of automation patterns (shell scripts, Lambda functions, CloudFormation templates) rather than the ability to write production-grade code from scratch.

What's New in the Exam

This is the section that matters most for anyone deciding whether to wait for the new exam or rush the old one. The SOA-C03 outline adds several topic areas that had little to no presence in SOA-C02:

Everything tested on SysOps Administrator is still fair game on CloudOps Engineer Associate; the topics above are layered on top, and the domain structure is simply more detailed and better organized than before.

For candidates already comfortable with core SysOps material (monitoring, deployment, security and compliance, high availability and resilience), the incremental study load is concentrated almost entirely in containers, modern observability tooling, and infrastructure-as-code automation.


What Current SysOps Administrator Holders Should Do

Anyone who already holds an active SysOps Administrator Associate certification does not need to take any action:

  • The existing certification remains valid for its full term
  • No recertification is required while it's active
  • The badge will continue to display "SysOps Administrator Associate" — it will not be relabeled to CloudOps Engineer
  • When the certification comes up for renewal, the new CloudOps Engineer Associate exam will be required to renew it

There is an alternate path worth knowing about: passing the DevOps Engineer Professional exam automatically grants the CloudOps Engineer Associate certification, provided the SysOps Administrator Associate certification is still active at the time DevOps Engineer Professional is passed. The same logic applies to renewing an active DevOps Engineer Professional certification — it must be renewed while the SysOps Administrator Associate credential is still active. If the SysOps Administrator certification has already expired, the CloudOps Engineer Associate exam has to be taken directly.


What Candidates Currently Studying Should Do

For anyone mid-preparation for the old SysOps Administrator exam, the decision comes down to timing relative to September 29, 2026:

  • Close to finishing preparation: Book and take the SysOps Administrator (SOA-C02) exam before September 29. There's no benefit to switching at this stage.
  • Just starting, or mid-way through and unlikely to finish in time: Shift focus to the new CloudOps Engineer Associate (SOA-C03) exam rather than racing an unrealistic deadline.

Either way, prior study time is not wasted. The new exam is not a rewrite from scratch — the large majority of its material is still grounded in SysOps Administrator content, with the new topics layered on top rather than replacing what came before. Course providers, including Udemy and Pluralsight instructors, are actively updating their existing SysOps courses to cover the SOA-C03 changes rather than producing entirely separate courses.


How to Prepare

Two main preparation routes are available at launch:

  • AWS Skill Builder has a dedicated exam prep path for CloudOps Engineer Associate, running approximately 16.5 hours of lectures and training. Full access requires an AWS Skill Builder subscription, priced at roughly $29/month — affordable for candidates who can complete their prep within a single month.
  • Third-party platforms such as Udemy and Pluralsight already have established SysOps Administrator courses, and their instructors are updating that material to reflect the SOA-C03 changes as the transition rolls out.

There's no strong reason to favor one platform over the other — the practical approach is to pick a single resource, work through the concepts thoroughly, and reinforce them with practice questions before booking the exam.
